Professor Malcolm West

Malcolm West is Professor of Medicine who has trained as a cardiologist. His principal research interests are genetics factors associated with susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases (especially hypertension, cardiac hypertrophy and hyperlipidaemia) and aortic aneurysm disease (Marfan syndrome and abdominal aortic aneurysm). He also has interests in the relationship between periodontal and cardiovascular diseases.

Malcolm West obtained degrees in Medicine and Science at the University of Sydney where he also undertook postgraduate training in cardiovascular disease. He has worked at Oxford University, UK and the National Heart and Lung Institute in USA. He has held academic positions at Flinders University of South Australia and the University of Queensland where he is now Mayne Professor of Medicine and Head of the Discipline of Medicine. He is also Head of the Cardiovascular Research Unit at Prince Charles Hospital. He is involved with clinical trials investigating genetic factors underlying hypertension and hyperlipidaemia. In a collaborative study with the School of Dentistry (G. Seymour) and Discipline of Surgery (P Walker) the role of periodontal disease in coronary heart disease and atherosclerosis is being investigated. His group is studying the cell biology of aortic aneurysm disease associated with Marfan syndrome, bicuspid aortic valve and abdominal aortic aneurysm. Other work includes studies in cell signaling pathways in cardiac hypertrophy, experiments utilizing gene therapy for hypertension based on gene transfer and RNA interference technology
